GER in Indian higher education estimated to be about 12.4%

New Delhi: The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Indian higher education is estimated to be about 12.4%, as compared to estimated world average of 26%. In order to achieve the targeted GER of an additional five per cent by the end of the XI Plan, a substantial increase in Plan allocation has been made for the expansion of higher education.
India No. 2 in sending students abroad

New Delhi: More students than ever before are leaving their homeland to pursue higher studies abroad. The number of these mobile students increased two-and-a-half times between 1975 and 2007, to reach 2.8 million. Two-thirds of these foreign students make a beeline for six countries - the US, UK, France, Australia, Germany and Japan in that order.

New Delhi: The world's leading universities such as Harvard and Yale could soon be allowed to open colleges in India under new legislation proposed by the government. Human resources development minister Kapil Sibal said that inviting foreign universities into the country could help provide some of the millions of young people with skills needed in the fast-growing economy.
Plan budget for higher education increased by Rs 2000 crore

New Delhi: Government has proposed to hike the overall plan budget for higher education for the next fiscal by Rs 2,000 crore. Taking forward the government's intent of having one Central University in each of the uncovered state, an amount of Rs 827 crore has been allocated in the Budget for the purpose. IITs and NITs have been allocated Rs 2,113 crore which includes a provision of Rs 450 crore for new institutes.
